Her Story
“For I am now ready to be o昀昀ered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have fought a good 昀椀ght, I have 昀椀nished my course,I have kept the faith.”
2 Timothy. 4:6-7
On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the Williams/Rooks family lost their
venerable matriarch, Hilda Madeline Rooks, at the age of 87.
She was born on August 21, 1937, the last child of the late John
Perkins and Fannie Lee Williams. Hilda passed away peacefully in
the arms of her daughter.
Momma Hilda, as she was affectionately called, was reared in Severn
(Queenstown) and received her early education at Queenstown
Elementary School. She was a graduate of Wiley H. Bates High
School (Class of 1955) and still held on to her class ring.
Hilda’s Christian upbringing began at home and continued at
Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Severn, where she later
reaf昀椀rmed her faith to remain a loyal, life-long member. Hilda and
her siblings often walked from Jones Road to Quarter昀椀eld Road to
attend the “Old Church”, where she 昀椀rst sang in the youth choir.
As time passed, she became a member of the senior choir and
Metropolitan United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist
Women). Growing up, there was no need for a lot of outside
friends, because as the youngest of ten, Hilda was close to the
younger siblings: Emerson, Sylvenia, Hazel, along with her niece,
Audrey and nephews, Leon and Melvin.
